Time it right
The 22 westbound and the 405 north both back up. Leaving before 6:30 or after 9 cuts 15–25 minutes off an Irvine or LA run.
The 22 eastbound through the Orange Crush is the choke point. Harbor and Brookhurst surface streets are often faster than the freeway for short hops.
Angel Stadium, Honda Center and Disneyland fireworks nights push traffic onto Harbor and Chapman. Plan around 7pm first pitches and 9:30pm fireworks.
Leave the car
Routes route along Harbor, Brookhurst, Chapman and Garden Grove Blvd. The 43 and 60 are the workhorse lines for crossing the city without a car.
Anaheim (ARTIC) and Santa Ana stations put downtown LA about an hour away by train, without the 5 freeway.
Flat terrain end to end. The Santa Ana River Trail is the long-distance route — Anaheim to the beach with almost no traffic lights.
